Learn how to build a map of the social network surrounding your brand, conference, product, or event.

This is a hands-on guide to creating social network maps from live twitter data.

- Create a visualization that reveals groups, communities and influential participants in the swarm of people mentioning keywords of interest to you.

- Create a visual web of the relationships among the people who mention these keywords when they follow, mention or reply to one another.

- Learn how to calculate key metrics using a free and open add-in for Excel 2007 (NodeXL) that can identify key contributors who play influential roles in your communities.

- Compare your maps to other workshop participants and to a growing gallery of maps of keywords related to conferences like Web2.0, Enterprise 2.0, 140conf, and others.

- Come with your own query terms and make a map during the workshop with our assistance.

Jan 6, 2010: CHIFOO Meeting: Confessions of a Public Speaker with Scott Berkun at White Stag Building

Presented by Scott Berkun,
author of "Confessions of a Public Speaker" and other books
http://www.scottberkun.com

If you wonder why your wonderful ideas rarely get accepted, or are compromised beyond recognition in meeting after meeting, it might not be your creative design talents that are the problem. It’s your ability to frame, shape and pitch your ideas effectively to others.
This fun, brutally honest, interactive talk, loosely based on the O’Reilly book ‘Confessions of a Public Speaker’, will give you everything you need to know to present, pitch, convince and sell your ideas so your world domination plans can begin.

Dec 2, 2009: PRSA Silicon Valley Presents: Media Predicts 2010 at Computer History Museum

Making the List: What's Hot and What's Not in 2010

Join us December 2 when PRSA Silicon Valley presents the must-attend visionary event of the year at the Computer History Museum. How will the technology landscape be different a year from now? What company is poised to become the next FaceBook?

Media Predicts 2010 (Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009) promises to be the ultimate event of the year, once again. Attendees will be able to network with many of the Silicon Valley's Who's Who, discussing - over cocktails in advance of the main event - what they think will be big in the coming year. You won't want to miss out on what promises to be a memorable evening, and you'll be first to hear from the top journalists and bloggers what the biggest technologies, companies, issues and trends will be in the year ahead.

Bring your customers, partners and colleagues along to celebrate the year and set the stage for a remarkable one ahead. Seats are limited and this event sells out annually weeks or months in advance, so we recommend you REGISTER NOW to assure your seat or table. Note that PRSA Silicon Valley will keep attendance fees at the same reasonable level to ensure attendance is not a barrier to anyone wishing to attend in a continuing tough economy. Thank you to our sponsors for making this possible!

Nov 26, 2009: Open Source Show and Tell at The Team

Once again, The Team (Design Agency) and Osmosoft (Open Source Innovation arm of BT) have asked some of London's open source peeps to come and show what they're up to. Entry is free, each slot is about 10-15 minutes, and afterwards we go for beers at a pub near Borough Market.

Here's the tentative line-up (subject to change):

(Speaker TBC), Canonical - Ubuntu Update
Julien Fourgeaud, Symbian - Managing the Symbian community
Jeremy Ruston, Osmosoft - HTML5 and the slow death of Flash
Leisa Reichelt, Disambiguity.com - Drupal 7 Update
Phil Hawksworth, The Team - Playing with each others toys: Developing with open technologies
Rain Ashford, BBC - Open Source Gaming for Handhelds
Robbie Clutton, BT - iPhone development using web technologies

Keep an eye on The Team's Twitter stream for updates.

Also, Andrew Back is bring along his art exhibition "No Numbers", fresh from an outing at the Horse Hospital:

"No Numbers" is a playful response to Foxx's seminal 1980 electronic music work, Mr No. The music is transformed into a sequence of numbers -- digital samples -- which the viewer is encouraged to copy down using the paper and pencils provided.

At a rate of one number per second it would take 4 weeks to transcribe the original 3'18" work in CD quality. The futility of this task reflects the artist's interest in what we may be compelled to do but that which is ultimately, humanly, impossible.

The reduction to a slow, seemingly random series of numbers highlights the essentially approximate nature of digital sampling. This links to the artist's interest in exploring the aesthetic and cultural questions suggested by the analogue-digital distinction.

The title of the piece suggests remix and reappropriation, but also codes for a putative request from the copyright holder of the original work. Downloading music, we're told, is theft. Four weeks of laborious, transcription seems more like pilgrimage."
